Out of His Hands and Pocket

Jared Wilson Maple St. SE, Albuquerque, NM created on Mon December 9, 2013

I do not have health care at this moment. And I wish to have health care, but I don't really know how to get healthcare for my age and for the amount of money I'm making. I've heard about things that my employers offer, but other than that I don't really know too much about how to get that accomplished. I work at Gardunos inside the Albuquerque Hotel. I've talked to them a little bit about it; they provide eye and dental for $60 a month, but only eye and dental.

So, I was living downtown, this was about two years ago. I had just walked out of my house it was in a, I would say, kind of bad area of downtown off of third street and central. And I just went out to my car to get something and I was walking back and a gentleman I don't know who he was had essentially jumped me, knocked me out, and then just left. So I got up and I had to go to the hospital. I told my parents about it, so we rushed me off to the hospital, to emergency care. I had to get an MRI to get my head scanned because I had been knocked out. Once we got that all done with everything seemed to be okay. But, now I'm facing bill collectors who are calling me and telling me that I owe, I think it is $1300 for one MRI scan that was a thing that was completely out of my hands.  I had no health insurance at the time, and now this on top of school debt... I don't know how to pay it back and I don't have the means to pay it back.

My parents, I'm not sure exactly what insurance they're on. I've asked them if there's anyway I can be on their insurance, but they couldn't through their employers. My dad is a truck driver and my mom goes with him, so the same company employs them both. I think that company only allots it for them. It doesn't extend to their family.

The last time I had health insurance was when I was 17. I'm 24 now. I would love to get enrolled into anything that would help me in my situation. I make enough money to pay for what I need to live. Other than that I don't really have any other money that I can put out for things like health insurance, even though I know it's important. I just really don't have the extra cash for it.
