The health care industry is the main driver of the four-county Albuquerque metropolitan area’s private sector economy.
In 2011, the sector employed 48,591 people and had an annual payroll of $2.1 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
That $2.1 billion represented 20.5 percent of the area’s $10.4 billion annual private sector payroll.
The area had 18,466 businesses with employees in 2011 and they employed 267,731 people. Of those businesses, 85 percent had fewer than 20 employees, and 94.7 percent had fewer than 50 employees. Ten businesses, or .054 percent, had 1,000 or more workers.
