Medicaid for the Disabled: A Good Thing

Guida Downtown, Albuquerque created on Fri November 15, 2013

My name is Guida. I live in Albuquerque, NM. I’ve been in New Mexico since 1998. In 2002, I was bitten by a black widow spider which caused a major stroke in my right brain stem. I have to say if it wasn’t for Medicaid services here in NM, I wouldn’t know where I would be today.

I literally, overnight, went from walking, talking, and moving around, to being flat on my back, unable to move, unable to eat, unable to turn on my own. It was a real shock. Anyhow, I remember laying in the ER, feeling like I would never be able to do anything ever again. However, thanks to Medicaid I got the rehab I needed to recover most of walking ability and moving ability, I was able to get services to live in my own apartment in Albuquerque, with an AID. Thank god for Medicaid. It allows me to live on my own and I wouldn’t know where I’d be today. I am very grateful for Medicaid services.

I would really like to encourage people, to apply for Medicaid services and whatever coverage you can apply towards here in NM. My personal experience with Medicaid has been extremely positive for over 10 years. I’ve been able to go to the doctor, no co-pays, and didn’t have to deal with a lot of paper work.

The Medicaid system is really set up to be very user friendly. I think it’s going to be even better for people in the future.
