BREAKING: John G. Franchini Selected as NM Superintendent of Insurance

A press release from the Chair of the Insurance Nominating Committee confirms our earlier tweet that John G. Franchini was appointed today as New Mexico’s superintendent of insurance by the Insurance Nominating Committee.  Mr. Franchini’s term is effective on July 1, 2013 and expires on December 31, 2015.

"This is what HANM was working for. It assures continuity in implementing the ACA. Also, John Franchini has been sensitive to the concerns of consumers and consumer advocates," said Barbara Webber, Executive Director of Health Action New Mexico.

This comes as particularly good news given all the changes that are already occuring in health care in New Mexico. Among other things, the Office of Superintendent of Insurance will be responsible for approving the health insurance plans that will be hosted on the state's marketplace (aka the "Exchange").

"John will provide important leadership and insight as the state implements the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,” said Chris Krahling, chair of the Insurance Nominating Committee. "Mr. Franchini brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and professionalism to this position.  He has demonstrated a commitment to ethically protecting consumers while ensuring that the insurance industry is treated fairly and remains financially healthy and competitive in New Mexico."
