Here they come again!

Sneaky last-minute rate increase seeks to avoid public scrutiny
Tell Blue Cross Blue Shield to stop increasing our health insurance rates!

For the second time in a year, Blue Cross Blue Shield has asked for a double-digit increase in health insurance premiums for New Mexicans.  While they post record profits and award multi-million dollar bonuses to their Illinois-based executives, New Mexican families are being priced out of health insurance.

Don't let this happen!  Tell Blue Cross Blue Shield to withdraw their sneaky last-minute rate increase.

What’s this all about?
Here in New Mexico, Blue Cross Blue Shield just announced a 10 percent increase on rates for self-employed and individual insurance policy holders in the state .  This comes on the heels of a 21 percent increase the company imposed on the same policyholders less than a year ago.

This proposed rate increase by BCBS comes right before new strict rate-review guidelines are to go into effect thanks to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the national health reform law that cracks down on double-digit rate increases through increased scrutiny.

In a time of record profits for the insurance industry, responsible hardworking Americans have found themselves under water and struggling to get by—let alone to pay their increasing insurance premiums.  But the Affordable Care Act is holding the industry accountable by requiring any increase of 10 percent or more to be reviewed by state or federal experts. The law also requires insurance companies to publicly justify unreasonable premium increases, bring great transparency and lower costs to American families.

While New Mexico’s other major insurers -- United, Lovelace and Presbyterian -- decreased premium costs by as much as 20%, Blue Cross Blue Shield is forging ahead trying to get its rate increase in before increased scrutiny under the new health reform law.
